Computer Tampering

A person can be sentenced up to 15 years in state prison if they are convicted of Computer Tampering in the First Degree pursuant to Penal Law §156.27. This offense merely requires that a person use (directly) or causes the use of a computer service or computer without the right to and intentionally alters or damages computer data or a computer program. The damage caused must exceed $50,000. As is the case with all "computer crimes," numerous other and equally or more serious offenses are often associated with this crime including Identity Theft, Falsifying Business Records and other crimes.
